Chapter 5

Spencer and Gabe were waiting for Ryan on a deserted street. It was dark outside, but it wouldn’t be for long. They had to hurry.

“Hide behind that pillar over there,” said Spencer, pointing. “I’ll be behind this one.”

“No, stay. What if I mess up?” Gabe replied nervously.

Spencer clapped him on the back. “Don’t worry.” He walked over to another pillar.

Gabe took a deep breath. “I don’t really want to do this, but I have many reasons to. He will die.” He drew his sword.

From his pillar, Spencer spied on Gabe. “I have him wrapped around my finger. It doesn’t matter if he kills Ryan or if Ryan kills him, or even if they kill each other. It all works for me. Although, Gabe does have to die. If he finds out I took the jewels and never gave them to Patrick, he’ll tell Pete. And really, Ryan must die too. Pete might tell him everything and I can’t have that. No, they both must die.”

Ryan entered the street, yawning. Gabe jumped out and attacked him.

“Die!” he yelled.

Ryan pulled his sword and stabbed Gabe.

“Oh!” cried Gabe. “I am slain!” He fell down where he stood, his face covered by shadows.

Spencer leapt from behind his pillar and stabbed Ryan in the leg. He then Ran off.

Ryan fell to the ground. “Help! Murder! Murder!” he cried.

From a balcony Pete smiled. “Spencer has done his pledge, now I must do mine.” He went inside.

Frank and Bob walked nearby and Ryan called out to them. “Help! Murder!”

Gabe groaned from his place on the ground.

“What was that?” asked Frank.

At that moment Spencer walked past them.

“There’s someone,” pointed out Bob.

“Who’s there crying murder?” called Spencer.

“We don’t know,” replied Frank.

“Here! For the love of god, here!” yelled Ryan.

Spencer rushed over to Ryan. Frank and Bob followed slowly.

“Ryan! What happened?”

“I was attacked by two men. One from the front, I wounded him, and another from the back. The wounded one is still here.”

Spencer looked at Frank and Bob. “Well? Come and help!”

Spencer went over to Gabe. He knelt down next to him and stabbed him.

“Spencer,” Gabe whispered as he died. “Damn you.”

Frank asked Ryan, “What did they hit?”

“My leg.” Frank nodded and ran off to get more help.

“This one is of no use,” Spencer said. He saw Brendon coming and grabbed him. “Is this the other one Ryan?” he asked.

Brendon broke free of Spencer’s grip and ran to Ryan. “Oh Ryan! My dear Ryan! I heard you cry out! Oh Ryan!” He threw himself at Ryan. Ryan hugged him close.

Bob applied a tourniquet to Ryan’s leg. “Who is that one?” he asked pointing at Gabe.

“Let’s find out.” Spencer grabbed a nearby light. “By god! It’s Gabe!”

“From home?” asked Bob.

“You know him?” questioned Spencer.

Frank came back at that moment with men and two litters. The men carefully placed Ryan on one and Gabe on another.

“Ryan!” Brendon cried as the two were carried off. He tried to go after them, but was stopped by Spencer.

“What do you know of this?” Spencer asked menacingly.

“Nothing, I swear!”

Jon came by then and asked, “What’s going on?”

“Gabe is dead and Ryan is almost dead,” snapped Spencer.

“Where was he?” asked Frank.

“At my house. All night,” replied Brendon shakily.

“Jon, tell Pete what has happened,” said Spencer. Jon nodded and raced off. Spencer threw Brendon to Bob. “Deal with him.”

Frank and Bob glared at Spencer and took Brendon to see Ryan.

Once they were gone, Spencer looked at the sky. “Tonight will either make me or break me.” He turned and ran into the complex.

Pete sat at the window and looked at Patrick, who was asleep in their bed. By him, Pete had a candelabra.

“I won’t shed his blood, stars. I promise you that much. I won’t scar his perfect skin. He has to die though, or he’ll betray more men.”

He picked up the candelabra and walked over to the bed. He sat next to Patrick and put the candles on the nightstand.

“I’ll put out the light, then put out my light.” He put out one candle. “It’s easier in the dark.” He put out another candle. He paused. “No, I want to see him die.”

Pete leaned down and kissed Patrick. Patrick moaned and smiled into the kiss.

“One more kiss, just one more. Then I’ll kill him and love him after. One more and it’s the last.”

He kissed Patrick again.

“He awakens.” Pete pulled back and waited.

“Who’s there? Pete?” Patrick rubbed his eyes and sat up.

“Are you coming to bed?”

“Have you prayed tonight Patrick?”

“Good. I will not kill an unprepared spirit. No, I don’t want to kill your soul.”

“Why do you talk of killing?” Patrick asked softly.

Pete said nothing. Patrick stared at him.

“I hope you will not kill me,” whispered Patrick.

“I don’t have a choice. You betrayed me.”

“With whom?” cried Patrick.

“Ryan. He had your handkerchief.”

“No! Send and ask him.”

“He’s already dead and soon you will be too.”

Patrick scrambled off the bed as Pete followed.

“I never gave him anything!” yelled Patrick.

“No! Has he confessed?” Patrick ran to the door, but Pete threw him to the floor.

“Yes! He said he used you!”

“It’s a lie!” Patrick got up and ran for the window. Pete was quicker. He picked up his husband and threw him on the bed.

“Pete, please let me live tonight!”

“Half an hour!”

“It’s too late!”

Patrick sobbed. “Let me have a one prayer!”

“Never again.” Pete straddled Patrick, grabbed a nearby pillow, and smothered him.

Suddenly, there was a bang at the door. It was Jon. “Pete! Pete!”

Pete looked at the door and then down at Patrick. “Still not dead. I don’t want you to linger in pain.” He pressed harder.

“Pete!” called Jon.

“Just wait a fucking minute!”

Pete got off the bed and looked at his husband. “Dead. And Jon has come to tell me of Ryan’s death.” He drew the curtains around the bed and went to the door.

“What?” he asked as he opened it.

“Ryan killed Gabe,” Jon said.

“Is Ryan dead?”

Pete’s eyes flicked to the bed. “Then murder’s out of tune and sweet revenge grows harsh.”

“Falsely murdered,” groaned Patrick in the silence.

“What was that?” asked Jon.

“That was Patrick!” Jon rushed to the bed and pulled open the curtains. “Oh! Oh!” he cried.

“I die a guiltless death,” Patrick whispered.

“Who has done this?”

“Nobody, I myself.” He closed his eyes and died.

“Ha! He lies. I did it!” boasted Pete.

“You! Why?”

“He was a whore!”

Jon laughed as he cried. “A whore? He was true!”

“Ryan fucked him! Ask your husband.”

That made Jon blink. “My husband?”

“Your husband,” Pete nodded.

“That Patrick was false?”

Pete nodded again.

“My husband?” Jon muttered.

“Yes. Honest Spencer was the one who clued me in.”

“My husband?”

“Are you a parrot? Yes, your fucking husband!”

Jon slapped Pete. “You fool! You dolt! You moron!” He raced to the door. “Murder! Murder! Pete has killed Patrick!”

Gerard, Bob, and Spencer rushed into the room.

“What is going on?” asked Gerard.

Jon turned to Spencer. “Have you come to take some blame?”

“What?” asked Bob.

Jon kept looking at Spencer. “Say it isn’t true! Tell me you didn’t say these things about Patrick!”

“I always tell the truth,” Spencer replied calmly.

“Did you say Patrick was false to Pete?”

“I did.”

“You lie! False with Ryan?”

“Yes. Be silent!”

“I will not!” yelled Jon. “Patrick is dead and it is your fault!” He pointed to the bed.

Everyone looked at the bed. Pete sat at the end of it. “It’s true,” he said.

“Shut up Jon and go home,” Spencer demanded.

“No! I don’t think I’ll ever go home again!”

Pete laughed hysterically. “Patrick was foul and false. I cleansed him.”

Bob stared at Pete in shock. “I am glad Patrick’s father is dead. This would kill him.”

Pete continued on, as if no one had spoken. “Spencer knows he was with Ryan. He saw the handkerchief.”

Jon gasped. “That’s what you did with it?”

Spencer grabbed Jon’s arm and pulled him close. “Shut up! Shut up!”

Jon cried. “I will not! I will not! You stupid man,” he yelled at Pete. “I found the handkerchief and gave it to my husband!”

“Be quiet!” Spencer yelled.

“He often begged me to steal it,” Jon sobbed. “Patrick did not give it to Ryan. I found it and gave it to Spencer!”

Pete’s eyes narrowed as he finally realized the truth. “You motherfucker!” He leapt for Spencer.

Spencer stabbed Jon in the back and ran. Bob chased after him, as Gerard disarmed Pete. Pete slumped to the ground.

“Go,” he said tiredly. “Go after him.”

Gerard left to chase Spencer. Pete picked up Jon and placed him next to Patrick on the bed. He watched them both.

Jon sighed. “He loved you, you fool. Even in death.” He hummed ‘Willow’ and then died.

Pete laid his head in his hands. He then looked about the room and grabbed a nearby sword and dagger. Bob had come back to the room to watch over Pete.

“Bob, please let me speak,” he said.

Bob nodded, but watched him closely.

“My sweet Patrick, dead at my hands. Caused by a man I trusted. Fuck, Bob. What has happened to me?”

At that moment, Frank, Gerard, Ryan-who was hobbling along-, and a chained up Spencer came into the room.

“Here are Pete and Spencer,” began Frank.

Pete suddenly attacked Spencer. He was disarmed quickly, but he managed to wound Spencer.

“I’m not dead,” mocked Spencer.

Pete snarled at him.

“Here are the conspirators,” Frank said again once everything was calm. He looked at Pete. “Did you two consent to kill Ryan?”

“Yes,” replied Pete.

Ryan stepped forward. “I never gave you any reason.”

Pete smiled. “I know that now. I hope you can forgive me.”

Ryan smiled and nodded.

“How did you get Patrick’s handkerchief?” Pete asked.

“I found it in my room. Spencer confessed he dropped it there on purpose.”

“I am a fool.” He sat down on the bed and hunched over.

“You must come back home with us,” said Frank. “Ryan will stay here to rule.”

Pete stood up slowly. “Let me speak first. When you tell the story, tell the truth. Don’t exaggerate or be too mean.” He walked over to Patrick. “Just remember to put down how much I loved him.” He stabbed himself and slumped over. Pete heard the others asking where he got the dagger, but he paid not attention to it. He spoke to Patrick. “I kissed you and killed you. Now, killing myself, I do so upon a kiss.” He kissed Patrick for the last time and died.

“I feared he would do this,” Ryan said sadly.

Frank kicked Spencer. “You fucker. This is your work. Get him out of my sight.” He turned towards the others. “Bob, the house and fortune are yours. You, Ryan, have the pleasure of sentencing this asshole, since you are the Governor. The time, the place and the torture. Enforce it!” Frank looked out the window. “I have to go back home and relate this sad event.”
